Activities Summary

Since 1999, The Fund has been in contact with the American Embassy in Kiev, in order to determine the need and acceptability of Fund services to cultural institutions in that country. At the suggestion of Robert Post, the Cultural Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Kiev, in October 2000, Paul Elicker and Jillian Poole visited Lviv as one of two selected sites for a future Fund program. Along with Odessa, the Embassy recommended Lviv as a culturally hospitable location for a management seminar.

The purpose of the Lviv visit was to get a better feel for that city's resources and to determine the most effective approach for a seminar, including audience selection. The two-day visit incorporated visits to numerous museums and cultural institutions including a Cultural Internet-Site, National Art Museum, National Ethnographic Museum, The Art Picture Gallery and Historical Museum the Opera, the National Cemetery, the Santa Clara Museum, the Scientific Library and the American Sabre Institute.

The visit concluded with a general meeting of representatives from most of the institutions visited to exchange ideas as to their needs and to ascertain the perceived need and level of desire for Fund services. Many special concerns were registered and we were specifically asked to return with a team to undertake a broad scale seminar. The Director of the Ethnographic Museum offered to spearhead arrangements and lend his facility for meetings. For a more detailed report on this trip see The Fund's website: www.fundforartsandculture.org.

Future Plans

The Fund has offered to conduct back-to-back management seminars in Lviv and Odessa in the spring of 2001. Details and dates for the seminars have still to be finalized, including the level of support that the Embassy will be in a position to provide and whether The Fund's text can be translated into Ukrainian.
