Meeting with ICOM in Paris and preparation for Bucharest conference.

Consultant: Jillian Poole, Kathy Southern

Jillian Poole and Kathy Southern, President and CEO of the National Children’s Museum in Washington, DC, and designated faculty leader for The Fund’s fall regional museum conference in Bucharest, traveled to Bucharest by way of Paris to meet with the Romanian Ministry of Culture, Fund partners and hosts for the conference. The objective of the trip was to plan the general agenda and overall events for the conference.

In Paris they lunched with John Zvereff, Secretary General ICOM, to enlist his support in promoting the conference among ICOM membership. He readily agreed, but has since resigned from that position.

On the first day after arrival in Bucharest, Kathy Southern was given an overview of Bucharest Museums. The first full day of meetings began at the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs with Dr. Virgil Stefan Nitulescu, General Secretary; Alis Vasile; Mircea Victor Angelescu; Raluca Bem Neamu, Education Officer, National Museum of Art, and another representative of the art museum. General plans were outlined and agreed upon, and Dr. Nitulescu agreed to give the keynote address. This was followed by a tour and meeting at the National Village Museum with Paula Popoiu, General Manager, and Georgetta Stoica, former director, who were The Fund’s partners for the 2006 conference.

Tuesday began with a meeting at the National Museum of Art of Romania with Roxana Theodorescu, General Director. The National Museum of Art is to be the third partner to the Ministry and The Fund for the conference. The Director generously agreed to give a guided tour of the museum to the participants on the opening day of the conference.

Since these meetings occurred, the meeting agenda has been clarified and agreed upon and a third Fund team leader has been recruited. The Fund Faculty now consists of Kathy Southern, Elaine Gurian, a museum consultant, and Stephen Feber, a tourism consultant. The Romanian Ministry of Culture has recruited two other faculty members and the Getty Foundation has generously made a grant to cover The Fund’s costs. We look forward to a successful conference.
