Ward Mintz, Deputy Director of the Newark Museum traveled to Vilnius, Lithuania in mid-March for two days of discussions with officials from the Lithuanian Art Museum (LAM). The meetings were designed to follow-up on conversations held over the past two years between Chairman Paul Elicker and museum officials on the needs of the LAM and other art institutions in Lithuania. The LAM is one of the largest cultural institutions in Lithuania, housing over 200,000 items of Lithuanian folk, fine and decorative arts.
Mr. Mintzs wide-ranging meetings included sessions with the director of the museum, Dr. Romaldus Budrys, curators, keepers and restorers from the museums Pranas Gudynas Restoration Center and curators from the Contemporary Art Documentation Center. Among the topics of particular interest to the Lithuanians were: how curators can work with educators, issues of museum security and more specific tasks of guards, structure of American boards of trustees and how American museums budget and spend their resources.
The Director and staff of the LAM expressed keen interest in having The Fund provide training on topics such as:
Managing museums in the new market economy;
Project management and how various staff contribute to the project management process;
Strategies for attracting new staff members to the museum.
